Free trend EAs and indicators

The trend collection holds robots and indicators with "trend" in the name: moving-average systems, breakout followers, channel and ribbon indicators. Trend following is the strategy family with the longest evidence behind it and the hardest psychology, because it loses small most of the time and wins big rarely. Here is how to evaluate one.

How trend EAs make money

A trend follower enters when price has already started moving (a moving-average cross, a breakout of recent highs) and holds with a trailing stop until the move ends. It does not predict; it reacts. That means it is late into every move and gives back some profit at the end of every move. It pays for that by catching the few moves that run for weeks. Win rates of 30 to 45 percent with average wins two to four times average losses are normal and healthy.

The whipsaw problem

In a sideways market a trend EA enters, gets stopped, enters the other way, gets stopped again. This is where all of its losses come from, and where most people abandon it, right before the next trend. Filters reduce whipsaws but never remove them:

  • ADX above 20 to 25: only trade when there is measurable directional strength.
  • Higher-timeframe agreement: take H1 entries only in the direction of the D1 moving average.
  • Session filter: trends on most pairs start in London or New York, not in the Asian range.
  • Minimum ATR: skip entries when the range is too small for the stop to make sense.

Reading a trend EA's backtest

  1. Test at least three years. Trends are rare events; a six-month test proves nothing either way.
  2. Expect long flat or slightly down periods. If the curve has none, it is over-fitted.
  3. Check the largest single winning trade. If most of the profit is one trade, the system is thinner than it looks.
  4. The trailing stop distance matters more than the entry. Optimise that first.

Trend indicators in the collection

Ribbons, supertrend-style lines, and coloured candles are useful for seeing direction and harmful when used as entry signals on their own: they are all lagging by construction. Use them as the filter, not the trigger.

Build your own trend follower

The EA Builder templates include an EMA crossover with trailing stop and a MACD system filtered by the 200 MA with a daily loss limit. Adding an ADX condition is one more block. Related lists: breakout EAs, which are trend following by another name, and the gold collection, gold being the most trending retail symbol.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my trend EA lose so often?

That is the design. Trend followers take many small losses in ranges and a few large wins in trends. Judge it on net result over years, not on win rate.

What timeframe is best for trend EAs?

H1 and above generally give cleaner trends and lower cost per trade. M5 trend systems mostly trade noise.

Which filter helps most?

Higher-timeframe direction and an ADX threshold reduce whipsaws the most in typical tests, at the cost of missing some early entries.

Are trend EAs safer than grids?

Their risk per trade is defined by the stop, so the worst case is bounded. Grids have no natural bound. That makes trend EAs easier to size correctly.
