Free breakout EAs
Every file with "break" in its name lands in the breakout collection: London-open robots, Asian-range breakouts, Bollinger and Donchian systems. Breakouts are simple to describe and surprisingly hard to trade, because most breakouts fail. This post sorts the types and the settings that separate a usable one from a coin flip.
Three families of breakout EA
- Session breakout. Mark the high and low of the Asian session, place a buy stop above and a sell stop below at London open, cancel the other when one fills. The oldest and most tested retail strategy.
- Range breakout. Trade the break of the last N bars' high or low on any timeframe. Donchian channels are this.
- Volatility breakout. Enter when price closes outside Bollinger Bands or moves more than a multiple of ATR from the open. Often combined with a trend filter.
Why most breakouts fail
Stops cluster just beyond obvious highs and lows, so price is regularly pushed through them and back. A breakout EA with the entry exactly at the high and a tight stop is buying at the worst spot. The fixes are mechanical: an entry buffer beyond the level, a stop below the range midpoint instead of just below the level, and a filter that demands range contraction before the break (a narrow Asian range predicts a better London breakout).
Pending orders are the natural tool
Breakouts are the one strategy where pending orders beat market orders: the level is known in advance, so a buy stop placed above it fills at the break without the EA having to watch every tick. Give the orders an expiry so stale levels are not traded hours later, and delete the opposite order when one fills. The EA Builder has a London breakout template that does exactly this with two pending blocks and an On Trade event.
Settings to check on any breakout robot
| Setting | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Entry buffer | A few pips beyond the level, scaled for the symbol |
| Order expiry | A few hours; not "good till cancelled" |
| Max range size | Skip when the range is already wide (the move already happened) |
| One trade per day / session | Prevents re-entering a chop |
| Trailing or partial close | Breakouts that work run; take some off and trail the rest |
Testing notes
Session breakouts depend on server time. Check what time the EA thinks London opens versus your broker's server clock, including daylight saving shifts, or the whole strategy trades the wrong hour. Test across both halves of the year. For the trend-following side of the same idea see trend EAs; for the instrument that breaks out hardest, the gold collection.
Frequently asked questions
What time does a London breakout EA trade?
Usually 07:00 to 09:00 London time, but the EA sees broker server time. Check the offset and daylight saving before trusting the input default.
Why do breakout EAs lose in summer?
Ranges are narrower and breakouts fail more often in low-volume months. A minimum-range or ATR filter helps, or simply pause the EA.
Should breakout EAs use market or pending orders?
Pending stop orders with an expiry are the natural fit: the level is known in advance and the fill happens at the break.
Do Bollinger breakout indicators repaint?
The bands themselves do not; the current bar can still close back inside. Wait for the bar close, which is what shift 1 means in the builder and in most EAs.
