Free MT5 expert advisors
The free MT5 EAs collection is every .ex5 robot in the channel, with indicators filtered out, newest first. MetaTrader 5 is where most brokers now put new accounts, so this is the busiest list on the site. This post covers what is different about MT5 EAs and how to pick from a long list without testing all of them.
How the list is built
Any file ending in .ex5 whose name does not look like an indicator lands here automatically. That is a name-based rule, so a robot called "Gold Arrow EA" may be missed and a file called "Trend Scanner" may be excluded; the library always has everything if a search here comes up short.
Three things that make MT5 EAs different
- Netting versus hedging accounts. On a netting account, buy and sell on the same symbol merge into one position. Grid, hedge and recovery EAs written for hedging accounts break or behave strangely on netting. Check your account type in the terminal (Account tab) and pick files accordingly. The hedging collection is netting-unfriendly by definition.
- Symbol names. MT5 brokers add suffixes such as
EURUSD.rorXAUUSDm. An EA hard-coded to plain XAUUSD will refuse to trade or trade the wrong chart. Prefer EAs that use the chart symbol, or get the source and change one line. - The tester is better. MT5's Strategy Tester runs real ticks, multi-currency and forward tests. There is less excuse for skipping a test before demo. See how to test on demo.
A method for choosing from a long list
- Filter by what you trade. If you only trade gold, go to the gold collection instead of scrolling.
- Prefer names that say what they do. "EMA cross H1 EA" tells you more than "Ultimate Profit Machine v9". You can test a described strategy against its description.
- Skip anything you cannot size. If the EA has no lot or risk input at all, you cannot control drawdown. Skip it.
- Test three, not thirty. Pick three that match your symbol and timeframe and give each a full tester run and two demo weeks. Most people who "tested everything" tested nothing properly.
When a compiled .ex5 is not enough
If a file needs a small change, such as a fixed lot size or a symbol name, the MQL5 source vault may carry the editable version. Or build the same idea yourself in the EA Builder, which generates MT5 code with all inputs exposed.
Frequently asked questions
Will an .ex5 file work on MT4?
No. .ex5 runs only in MetaTrader 5. The MT4 equivalent is an .ex4 file, see the free MT4 EA collection.
Why does the EA not trade on my MT5 account?
The most common causes are a netting account with a hedging EA, a broker symbol suffix, or algo trading disabled. The EA-not-working guide lists the checks in order.
Are the MT5 EAs tested?
No. They are indexed as posted. Run the Strategy Tester and a demo account before risking money.
How many free MT5 EAs are there?
The count changes daily as the channel posts. The collection page shows the live number at the top.
